Latin Catholics cheer new diocese of Sultanpet
Latin Catholics celebrated the creation of the Diocese of Sultanpet, Palakkad, with territory taken from the Dioceses of Kozhikode and Coimbatore.
Pope Francis had announced the creation of Sultanpet as the 167th diocese in India at Rome on Saturday. This is considered as New Year’s gift to the Christian community of Palakkad district and the 150-year-old St. Sebastian Church at Sultanpet.
Pope Francis also appointed Rev. Fr. Peter Abir Antonysamy, the Archdiocese of Pondicherry-Cuddalore as the first Bishop of the new diocese.
The St. Sebastian Cathedral Church at Sultanpet, the headquarters of the new diocese, had special prayers and other celebrations on Saturday to mark the creation of the new diocese.
